On Sunday, fans of “Wonka” and “Dune” actor Timothée Chalamet attended a look-alike contest at Washington Square Park in New York City, hosted by YouTuber Anthony Po.
What they didn’t expect was for Chalamet himself to show up at the event, but that’s exactly what he did: sporting a moustache that made him nearly unrecognizable.
The American-French star approached two curly-haired competitors who were left in disbelief when they realized it was the actor himself.
Chalamet was captured posing for photos, one arm around the shoulders of each of his look-alikes, while a large screaming crowd surrounded him.
Dozens of participants stepped out to the park to show off their best Chalamet looks.
The winner would receive a grand prize of $50 and a trophy.
At one point, police arrived to shut the event down, with some fans alleging that a fake Chalamet was arrested.
On Monday, Po said he was fined $500 for organizing the event, which the New York Police Department reportedly said was “unscheduled.”
The actor’s brief attendance amused fans who shared on social media how “happy” it made them, calling it a “historic pop culture moment.”
Many fans said they were shocked by Chalamet’s appearance and his new ’stache.
The new facial hair and shorter cut come after he started filming a new role in the upcoming film “Marty Supreme,” replacing his usual shaggy, curly locks and clean-shaven look.
