Inuk singer-songwriter Elisapie grew up Salluit, a tiny Inuit community in northern Quebec, nearly 2,000 kilometres north of Montreal.
Her latest album, the Polaris Prize-nominated “Inuktitut,” features 10 stripped-back covers of classic rock and pop songs that she associates with her small northern community, each translated into and sung into her native language. Written alongside her close collaborator Joe Grass, the album has an intimate, organic sound, adorned with subtle instrumental flourishes, traditional drumming and Inuit throat-singing.
Ahead of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Juno-nominated artist dropped by the Star for an exclusive performance, and to discuss her perspective on the state of reconciliation in Canada today.
Elisapie will perform live in Toronto at the Opera House on Nov. 8.
