Two men were arrested at a RIDE checkpoint on Super Bowl Sunday after police in Whitby uncovered a large supply of crystal meth.

Authorities say the suspects entered the checkpoint near Consumers Drive and Garden Street in a black Volkswagen SUV.

When speaking with the suspects, officers say they detected the smell of cannabis and conducted a search of the vehicle, which led to the alleged seizure of nearly five kilograms of crystal meth.

Police arrested the driver of the vehicle, 34-year-old Adam Persaud of Oshawa, at the scene. He is facing three charges, including possession of crystal meth for the purpose of trafficking and operating a motor vehicle with cannabis and liquor readily available.

Officers also arrested the passenger, 31-year-old Darren Simpson of Whitby.

He has been charged with two counts of possessing a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. Police say those substances include cocaine and crystal meth.

Both men were held in custody for a bail hearing. No other details were released.
