York Regional Police have laid charges following a months-long investigation into a series of rock-throwing incidents in Markham and Whitchurch-Stouffville.
Authorities say two males were charged on Saturday in relation to an unspecified number of incidents that began in July 2024.
The OPP received more than 11 reports of rocks being intentionally thrown at vehicles along Highway 48 in Markham in 2024. Police in York Region also identified another nine reports in their jurisdiction.
In one of the incidents, two people suffered life-threatening injuries after an object struck their vehicle, leading to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 48 near Major Mackenzie Drive.
Police say an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy are facing mischief charges. They cannot be identified per the Youth Criminal Justice Act because both accused were youths at the time of the alleged offences.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and more charges could be laid in the future.
