The Citizen invited Ottawa candidates from the four main parties to write a short article explaining what they will do for their local riding if elected. Some chose to participate; others did not. Today, Kanata Conservative candidate Greg Kung:

Waiting hours on end with patients in a hospital hallway allows for significant reflection and conviction. I’ve heard the detractors: shut up and do your job. How can a Conservative in health care — I’m a paramedic — fight against Donald Trump?

Thanks for the advice, but no thanks. Unlike the critics, I’ve seen the emergency calls that have become all too familiar: drug overdoses and deaths, mental-health crises, violent crime and seniors left behind by a broken system. These aren’t headlines or slogans to me. They’re real lives, real families — right here in our city — who are paying the price for a lost Liberal decade. Direct results of a government that has lost touch with everyday Canadians.

There are real challenges that must be addressed and are within our control. Housing affordability for our younger generation, the collapse of the middle class, anemic economic growth, a criminal justice system failing our victims, and a mantra of “hard works pays off” crushed by regulation and high taxes.

We can make a choice for change in this election, to seize this opportunity to become self-reliant and bring home resource development and economic prosperity to stand up to the Americans. We are negotiating from a position of weakness because of Trudeau-Carney policies that have hurt so many. How can we trust them for a fourth term?

I’m in this because I believe Kanata deserves better. We have a vibrant tech sector and an industrial

. We’re fast-growing with incredible potential. Yet, some families 20 kilometres away from Parliament Hill have never felt less heard about access to housing and affordability, or about crime concerns, layoffs and economic uncertainty.

I served as an economic adviser to finance ministers Jim Flaherty and Joe Oliver, who delivered Canada’s last balanced budget. I know what responsible, compassionate governance looks like — and I’m ready to bring that same focus to Parliament. I’ll work tirelessly to attract economic growth in Ottawa. We’ll do that in part with the elimination of capital gains taxes to spur reinvestment in Canada; shovel-ready zones for construction and infrastructure; homes to keep pace with population growth and reducing red tape and regulation by 25 per cent.

I’ll advocate for a Blue Seal licence for foreign-trained doctors and nurses to practise in Canada, connecting our families with primary care and easing the burden on working parents by expanding childcare spaces and cutting middle-class income taxes.

I’ve served on the Ontario Parole Board and the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board. I’ve responded to the assaults and the overdoses. I’ll channel the realities of the road into funding for 50,000 drug treatment spots and demand tough action against car thefts, violent repeat offenders, and intimate partner violence.

My approach is simple: give the best possible service for all Canadians, no matter their background, ethnicity or creed, restoring hope, safety and affordability for all generations. It’s time for a change — and I’m ready to serve.
