The provincial Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate after an infant was struck Friday by a car driven by an on-duty police officer.

In a release, provincial police in Grenville County said the incident occurred at about noon when the unnamed officer was moving a personal vehicle in their driveway at a home in the Oxford Mills area.

Police said the 15-month-old child suffered “serious injuries” and was transported to a regional trauma centre.

Oxford Mills is about 70 kilometres south of Ottawa.

Because the SIU has invoked its mandate, police will not provide further details on the incident.

The SIU is a civilian agency responsible for investigating circumstances involving police and civilians that have resulted in a death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
