One man remains in a coma and another is facing charges after one Montfort Hospital patient was attacked by another in early May.
Abdourahman Omar said on June 5 that his cousin, Omar Aboubaker, had been admitted to Montfort on May 4 after complaining of dental pain. He also said hospital staff noticed that Aboubaker was “agitated.”
Afterwards, Omar said, his cousin was put into a sedative coma in the hospital’s mental health unit.
“They told us they were going to take care of him,” he said.
On May 7, though, Omar said, he received a call from the hospital saying that the night before another patient had entered Aboubaker’s room and attacked him.
“From that day, my cousin went into a coma, and today he’s still in a coma,” Omar said, adding that Aboubaker had been transferred
to The Ottawa Hospital.
Without identifying Montfort, the Ottawa Police Service said officers were called to a medical facility in the 700 block of Montreal Road just after
11 p.m. on May 6.
“A man in his 30s was charged with aggravated assault and impeding attempt to save life,” an OPS statement read. “He remains in custody until his next court date.”
A Montfort spokesperson confirmed that an incident between patients had recently occurred at the hospital. Citing privacy and confidentiality obligations, they did not confirm the identity of the patients involved.
“As is standard procedure for all incidents, an internal review has been launched,” the spokesperson said.
