Pokémon, biking, soccer, animals and family. These were some of the things nine-year-old Archer Lowe loved most in his short life.
Archer, a student at
R. Tait Mackenzie Public School in Almonte, was riding a bicycle when he was struck by a school bus on Paterson Street at about 3:40 p.m. on Wednesday.
Police say the collision occurred
near another school. Witnesses conducted life-saving measures at the scene. Archer was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced deceased.
“He was a vibrant kid with a big smile who loved animals, especially his dog ‘Moose,’” said Mississippi Mills Mayor Christa Lowry in a statement. “He loved riding his bike and was a terrific soccer player – the best and fastest defence in his league.”
Flags at municipal buildings around Almonte were lowered to honour Archer. A memorial on Paterson Street was flooded with stuffed animals, toys, flowers and candles, along with colourful signs.
“We love you Archer,” one sign reads.
“We will remember you always,” a sign outside of Archer’s public school read.
At a time where the end of the school year would be cause for celebration, Lowry wrote it turned into a “somber and solemn time” in the wake of Archer’s death.
“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of young Archer and stand in support of all those who are grieving and to those affected by this accident,” she said. “Together, we mourn this heartbreaking loss and will be there for all those touched by this tragedy.”
Community members have also been pouring support to the Lowe family through social media and donations. A GoFundMe campaign, launched by Almonte resident Michelle Maguire, raised over $76,000 by 5 p.m. on Thursday.
Archer enjoyed Pokemon, in addition to riding his bike, soccer and Moose, said Maguire’s post.
“He wanted to be a soccer player when he grew up,” the campaign read. “Most of all he loved his family.
“This family needs our support during this absolutely unimaginable time.”
The campaign has been set up to support Archer’s family by raising funds for his funeral arrangements, therapy, counselling and provide relief as they grieve.
Those who were affected by the tragedy are urged to reach out to victim services for assistance at 1-866-575-0067.
The OPP investigation continues.
