Man drowns, his child rescued at Westboro Beach

A man is dead after he and his child got went underwater at Westboro Beach on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency responders were called to the beach at about 1:40 p.m. after reports that the two were in trouble.

“A quick-thinking member of the public was able to rescue the child, who was transported to CHEO as a precaution by Ottawa Paramedics,” the Ottawa Police Service said in a news release.

The father, who was later located by the Ottawa Fire Services and the Ottawa Police Marine, Dive and Trails Unit, was pronounced dead at hospital.

“Water is unpredictable, we encourage everyone to stay vigilant and practice water safety measures, such as supervising children closely, wearing life jackets where appropriate, and swimming in designated areas,” the release stated.
