An extra wrinkle has been introduced in the West Hunt Club heist of four paintings last month.

The pieces are back with a difference: Two of the portraits are now marred with huge paint blotches covering their faces. The other two now have a paintbrush and a pencil painted between their upper lips and noses.

Police have said the estimated value of the stolen pieces is $4,000. They were not able to estimate the cost of the damages or whether the paintings could be repaired.

Four pieces of art the Ottawa Police Service alleged were stolen off the walls of a Hunt Club business on June 7. The paintings have since been returned with alterations.

Police did not say how or when the works were recovered. They have not identified the site of the theft other than to say they were at a hotel on the 200 block of West Hunt Club Road on June 7.

The suspect entered the hotel at 3:42 a.m., removed the work from the walls and left by 3:49 a.m.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian man in his early 30s, about five feet seven inches tall with long hair.

Security cameras showed him wearing a blue-green and beige baseball hat, a tropical-print Adidas shirt, beige shorts, black socks and black-and-white sneakers.

He was also wearing a medical face mask.
