TV: ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’
I’m as sick of endless IP retreads as the next person, but this is the most worthy of the recent “Star Trek” spinoffs, and the one that most approximates the 1960s original in its capacity for both fun and substance. Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the crew of the USS Enterprise returned to Paramount Plus this week to battle the Gorn and other adversaries with generous helpings of humour and heart. Since the series is shot in the GTA, you can entertain yourself by picking out the Canadian co-stars, like Rong Fu and Melanie Scrofano. — Debra Yeo
Festival: Feastie
Feeling snackish? Head on down to this chic — and pup-friendly — festival on Saturday (Henderson’s Brewery, 128A Sterling Rd.) where, for just 15 bucks, you can listen to DJs, enter a cornhole tourney, shop at the market and take cocktail classes, as well as gorge yourself on delicious treats and drinkies from the city’s coolest food and cocktail stars. (Many of the participating businesses are BIPOC- and female-owned, so you can support your fellow under-represented community members and eat like a king!) We highly recommend the calamansi iced tea from Tita Flips, life-changing French toast by Simpl Things, and Truffles and Circumstance hot sauce. — Briony Smith
Theatre: Best of Fringe
Missed this year’s Toronto Fringe Festival? Then head to the Meridian Arts Centre in North York this weekend, where TO Live is remounting five hits as part of its jury-curated Best of Fringe series. The featured shows include the musical “Iris (Says Goodbye)”; “Playground,” based on music by the Juno-winning children’s singer-songwriter Jack Grunsky; “Thing My Dad Kept,” a solo show about grief; the musical comedy “My Pet Lizard, Liz: The Shakespearean Existential Crisis that Led to his Ultimate Demise”; and “David Lynch’s Seinfeld.” Each production runs for two performances and tickets are $25. — Joshua Chong
