An Ottawa bylaw officer was “attacked” and injured outside
city hall
on Saturday morning after issuing a parking ticket, city officials said.
Bylaw and Regulatory Services (BLRS) director Roger Chapman said in an email that Ottawa police arrested one person in connection with the incident.
Chapman also thanked a fellow city employee for intervening and stopping the assault.
“The incident was an unacceptable, cowardly act of violence and will not be tolerated. Our officers play an important role in upholding municipal regulations and community safety,” Chapman said in a statement.
“BLRS takes incidents of this nature very seriously and will conduct a full review to determine whether there are any other practices that can be put in place to reduce the risk to our staff.
“We are thankful the injuries sustained by our colleague are not more severe. We thank the city employee who came to the assistance of our officer and was able to end the attack, and to the Ottawa Police Service for their swift action in making an arrest.”
Chapman said no further details can be shared as the incident is under investigation.
