The province’s police watchdog has opened a file after a speeding e-bike struck and seriously injured a cyclist while being pursued by an Ottawa police officer cruiser Aug. 7.

In an online release, the Special Investigations Unit says an officer in an Ottawa Police Service cruiser attempted to stop two men who were “riding e-bikes at high speeds” in the Carling Avenue and Moodie Drive area.

The men fled onto a bike path next to Carling and one of the fugitives struck a cyclist.

The report states the cyclist, 28, was taken to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

The e-cyclists were not seriously injured, the SIU said in the release.

Ottawa police notified the SIU of the incident on Aug. 22.

Three SIU investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates police conduct in incidents where civilians are killed, seriously injured or allege sexual assault.
