Regional supervising coroner Dr. Louise McNaughton-Filion has announced an inquest will be held into the death of William Renwick, 49, who died of injuries he received while in custody at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre.

Renwick died at The Ottawa Hospital on Nov. 8, 2020, three weeks after he was attacked at the detention centre on Innes Road.

An inquest is mandatory under Ontario’s Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Renwick’s death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.

Renwick was fatally injured at the jail in a fight with his cellmate, a 37-year-old man.

Kavi Bar Wari was originally charged with aggravated assault, but the charge was changed to second-degree murder after Renwick died.

Bar Wari later pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter and was sentenced to eight years.

Further details regarding the inquest, including the date and location, are to be provided at a later date.
