The 50th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is now officially underway and day one of the celebration was already packed with celebrities in the city.
But if you didn’t manage to make it to the crowds of movie fanatics on King Street West, we’ve got you covered on the stars that have graced the festival so far. Here’s a look at who was in town on Thursday evening.
Charli xcx
Charli xcx was seen walking the red carpet at TIFF ahead of the world premiere of Pete Ohs “Erupcja.” She was also seen at a party hosted by Don Julio at Vinny Toronto for the movie with her co-stars.
The film features a “combustible chemistry” between a Polish florist, played by Lena Góra, and a British tourist, played by Charlotte Emma Aitchison, better known as Charli xcx.
Known for hits like “Club classics” and “Von Dutch,” the British singer gained international fame for her electro-pop music and for popularizing the term “Brat Summer” after her 2024 album release “Brat.”
She’s also made an appearance acting in the Prime Video comedy series “Overcompensating” starring Benito Skinner and is set to star in and produce an upcoming film called “The Moment” at A24, according to IMDB.
Elle Fanning
Golden Globe and Emmy-nominated actor Elle Fanning was seen attending a cocktail party at RBC House on Adelaide Street in celebration of the Canadian premiere of Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value,” in which she plays Rachel Kemp.
The film was already the Grand Prix winner at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and according to Toronto movie experts, it’s one that “is going to make a big impact come award season.”
Stellan Skarsgård
And speaking of “Sentimental Value,” Stellan Skarsgård, who plays Gustav Borg in the film, was also in attendance at the Sept. 4 cocktail party hosted at RBC House at Petros 82. The Swedish actor is also known for his roles in “Thor” and “Good Will Hunting.”
Renate Reinsve
Renate Reinsve also made an appearance at the “Sentimental Value” party alongside her co-stars. In the film, Reinsve plays Skarsgård’s daughter. But this isn’t her first time working with him. The pair also acted together in the 2021 film “The Worst Person in the World,” also directed by Trier.
Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaa
Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaa plays Skarsgård’s “more grounded” daughter Agnes in “Sentimental Value” and was also seen at the cocktail party with her castmates.
Joachim Trier
And the party wouldn’t be complete without the “Sentimental Value” director. Trier also made his appearance at the celebration. The director was born in Copenhagen and raised in Oslo but studied at the National Film and Television School in England. His debut feature, “Reprise” won TIFF’s Discovery Award in 2006.
Ryan Reynolds and Colin Hanks
Canadian icon Ryan Reynolds and actor Colin Hanks were also seen attending the world premiere of Hanks’ documentary “John Candy: I Like Me.” The documentary opened up the festival and includes candid testimonies from the beloved Canadian actor and comedian’s friends and family including Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, Catherine O’Hara and more.
Ethan Hawke
Award-winning actor Ethan Hawke made an appearance at Toronto’s BISHA Hotel ahead of the Canadian premiere of Richard Linklater’s film “Blue Moon.” Hawke plays Richard Rogers’ former lyricist Lorenz Hart.
The hotel is once again home to Deadline Portrait Studio during TIFF this year.
Shailene Woodley
Also spotted at the BISHA Hotel was Shailene Woodley who stars in Postsy Ponciroli’s “Motor City,” making its North American premiere during the festival. Alan Ritchson and Ben Foster act alongside Woodley in the film.
But this won’t be it for celebrity sightings at TIFF. From world premieres featuring actors like Angelina Jolie and Seth Rogen to appearances from celebrities including Margaret Qualley and Jacob Elordi, there are still lots of superstars who will make their way to the festival.
But beyond King Street West, there are also other spots in the city you might get lucky enough to spot a celebrity or two. And if you’re wondering what movies you should be watching from the festival, check out our recommendations from Toronto movie experts.
TIFF runs in Toronto until Sept. 14.
