Ottawa first responders teamed up Friday to rescue an injured construction worker who had fallen about three metres into a utility tunnel in the city’s south end.
Ottawa Fire Services said on social media they were called by Ottawa police to the scene in the 700 block of Heron Road shortly before noon.
The worker had been removing temporary wooden barriers covering a trench cut into the tunnel’s ceiling at ground level when he fell through, landing on his back.
Specialized OFS rope rescue teams assessed the situation and determined the safest method of extrication would be to lift the worker back through the uncovered opening.
Crews set up a twin-tension rope system and a litter was lowered to the worker, who was carefully “packaged” with assistance from Ottawa Paramedics Service members.
The worker was safely lifted from the trench and transferred into the care of Ottawa Paramedic Service experts to be medically assessed.
There was no word on the worker’s medical condition.
