Multiple people are in hospital after a collision in North York, police say.

The incident occurred in the Yonge Street and Churchill Avenue area just after 3:20 p.m. on Sunday.

Three pedestrians are in a trauma centre, and one driver is in a hospital, after a collision in North York, according to police.

Toronto police say the vehicle remained on the scene.

Driver veered off road, hitting three pedestrians

Speaking to reporters Sunday evening, Toronto police Insp. Dan Pravica says the car involved was a blue Volvo. The car was travelling southbound on Yonge and “for unknown reasons,” the driver veered off the road and hit three pedestrians on the sidewalk at the intersection of Yonge and Churchill.

Pravica says two pedestrians who sustained life-threatening injuries are a man and a woman in their mid-20s to early 30s. Meanwhile, the third pedestrian who sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, is a woman in her mid-20s to early 30s.

The driver is described as a man in his 70s.

Investigators say it’s unknown whether the victims have any relationship to each other, or if they were just walking side-by-side.

“It does not appear to be a targeted or intentional act right now,” said Pravica.

“Sad and painful memories”

Pravica says these kinds of incidents can bring up “painful memories.”

“I ask that for those people who are affected by this, even though it appears to be not related whatsoever or not in the same context, to seek some professional help if you need it,” he said.

Multiple roads in the area remain closed.

Churchill Avenue is closed between Yonge Street and Doris Avenue and from Canterbury Place to Yonge Street.

Yonge Street is closed between Northtown Way and McKee Avenue.
