ST. JOHN’S – A provincial election in Newfoundland and Labrador could be called as early as this afternoon.
The province’s Liberal government is required by law to call for a vote today.
Provincial law says election day must be on or before Oct. 14.
Election signs are sprouting across the province and there is a constant buzz on social media.
Liberal Leader John Hogan was sworn in as premier in May, replacing Andrew Furey.
Hogan’s main opponent will be Progressive Conservative Leader Tony Wakeham, who was elected leader in 2023.
The top campaign issues are expected to focus on the province’s new energy deal with Quebec, as well as health care and the province’s shaky finances.
The Liberals hold 19 of the legislature’s 40 seats, the Tories have 14, and the New Democrats hold one seat. As well, there are two Independent members and four vacant seats.
