What’s open and closed on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Tuesday, Sept. 30 is a day to recognize the damage caused by the

residential school system in Canada

and the intergenerational impacts it has on Indigenous survivors, families and communities.

The federal government will have a National Commemorative Gathering on Tuesday afternoon on Parliament Hill. The 90-minute event, called “Remembering the Children: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation”, will begin at 3 p.m. It will also be livestreamed on APTN and the CBC.

The weather forecast is sunny with a high of 19 C during the day and a low of 5 C in the evening.

Here’s what else you need to know about the National Day for

Truth and Reconciliation

:

OC Transpo

Buses and trains will run a weekday service on Tuesday.

Line 1 will run from Tuesday at 5 a.m. to Wednesday at 1 a.m. Lines 2 and 4 will run from 6 a.m. to midnight on Wednesday.

The rural shopper route 302 will run that day.

Para Transpo will run a regular service. Reservations can be made between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. by calling 613-650-5000, texting 57272 or by using the My Para Transpo app.

The Rideau Centre OC Transpo Customer Service Centre will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Green bin, recycling and garbage collection

The city says curbside green bin, recycling, garbage and bulky item collection will follow the normal schedule on Tuesday.

Collection of multi-residential recycling containers, bulky items and green bins will also follow the normal schedule.

The Trail Waste Facility Landfill will be open on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

City services

All ServiceOttawa and Provincial Offences and Administrative and Penalty System (APS) counters and phone lines will be closed:

  • Ottawa City Hall
  • Ben Franklin Place, 101 Centrepoint Drive
  • Orleans, 255 Centrum Boulevard
  • Metcalfe Client Service Centre, 8243 Victoria Street
  • Provincial Offences Court, 100 Constellation Drive

All community, recreation and cultural facilities will be open on Tuesday.

The Barbara Ann Scott Gallery, City Hall Art Gallery and Karsh-Masson Gallery will be closed.

The supervised consumption services and the site office

at 179 Clarence Street will be closed, but the mobile van will operate from 5 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Vaccination clinics,

Neighbourhood Health and Wellness Hubs, the Sexual Health Clinic, community dental clinics and Parenting-In-Ottawa drop-ins will be closed. Those looking for health advice are asked to contact a registered nurse at Health811. 

All four Employment and Social Services offices will be closed:

  • 370 Catherine Street
  • 2339 Ogilvie Road
  • 100 Constellation Drive
  • 2020 Walkley Road

All municipal child care centres will also be closed.

Libraries

Seven Ottawa Public Library branches will be open on Tuesday:

  • Beaverbrook, 2500 Campeau Drive
  • Cumberland, 1599 Tenth Line Road
  • Greenboro, 363 Lorry Greenberg Drive
  • Main,120 Metcalfe Street
  • Nepean Centrepointe,101 Centrepointe Drive
  • Ruth E. Dickinson, 100 Malvern Drive
  • St Laurent, 515 Côté Street

Regular hours will resume on Wednesday, Oct. 1.

Service Canada/Passport Services Office

All Service Canada Centre and Passport Services offices in Ottawa and Gatineau will be closed.

Canada Post

There will be no Canada Post delivery on Tuesday due to a national strike initiated by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers following the

federal government’s announcement

on Thursday, Sept. 25.

Malls

The Bayshore, Rideau Centre, St. Laurent, Place d’Orleans and Tanger Outlets malls did not announce any changes to their hours of operations for Tuesday.

Museums

The Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday with free admission in recognition of the National Day for

Truth and Reconciliation

. A morning ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m.

The Diefenbunker will be open from 9 a.m. to noon for a special ceremony on Tuesday.

The National Gallery of Canada will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Canadian Museum of Nature will observe its regular closure on Tuesday.

The Canada Agriculture and Food Museum will also be hosting a special exhibit called “Wahkohtowin: Buffalo and Moose Hide Experience” until Thursday, Oct. 2. The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday with free admission to all visitors.
