WINNIPEG – The Manitoba government is looking at having more data storage and cloud computing infrastructure based in the province.
Having local data centres and web-based services, instead of relying on those offered by Microsoft and Google in the United States, is recommended in a new report on the future of innovation and technology in Manitoba.
The report, from a group of data experts established by the province, says it’s important to avoid becoming overly reliant on networks and platforms in other countries, which could be subject to steep price increases.
Premier Wab Kinew says not sending all digital information south of the border would also help protect privacy and security.
He says servers and data centres will be built in the province.
The report contains more than a dozen other recommendations, including putting in place new measures to retain ownership of intellectual property created in Manitoba.
