REGINA – Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says Prime Minister Mark Carney’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping is a positive step forward.
Moe says he hopes Canada can build on its relationship with China to eventually see Beijing’s tariffs on Canadian canola and other food products removed.
He says it wouldn’t have been realistic for China to remove the tariffs during the meeting.
Carney has said he was pleased with the meeting and has accepted an invitation to visit China to further discuss trade issues.
Moe says Carney needs to also foster relationships with the United States and India, which have also imposed tariffs on Canada.
Moe says a recent anti-tariff advertisement by Ontario Premier Doug Ford was unhelpful in negotiating a deal with U.S. President Donald Trump.
“There’s going to be a lot of noise between now and whenever we’re able to get to that point, and I’m confident that we will,” he told reporters Friday. “We keep our eye on that deal. That’s what we want.”
