The World Series may not have been the triumph we all wanted, but the loss hasn’t dimmed the love Blue Jays’ wives and girlfriends feel for the town their men play for.
“For me, this is a story of falling in love with baseball again — the team, the women, the players, the fans, the staff, all of it,” wrote pitcher Shane Bieber’s wife, Kara, on Instagram after the knuckle-biting Game 7 loss. “We felt so welcomed from the moment we got to Canada. It’s something we’ll cherish forever.”
It’s a fitting sentiment for a playoff series that generated iconic images of the families of players — often with kids in tow — flooding the diamond after games to celebrate, an extension of the brotherly camaraderie that characterized this season’s Jays.
And Bieber — whose husband just exercised an option that means he’ll stick with Toronto for at least one more year — isn’t alone in sharing the love for the city where baseball has brought her family.
Here’s what a few of the other Jay WAGs have had to say about the city, post-playoffs.
Erica Scherzer, married to Max Scherzer
“When Max signed with Toronto I had a feeling we would enjoy this experience,” she wrote on Instagram on Monday. “Never could I have imagined how special this season could be.”
In fact, she goes on to say that out of 18 baseball seasons in the major leagues, none has impacted her family like this one.
“Toronto, our family fell in love with your beauty, culture and people,” Scherzer continues. “Playing for an entire country is truly special.”
Charlise Castro, married to George Springer
“Baseball doesn’t promise you fairy tale endings, but it gives you people and moments that change a lifetime,” she wrote on Instagram after the loss. “Feeling nothing but gratitude for the chance to represent Canada’s team and be part of something special.”
Taylor Frick, girlfriend of Trey Yesavage
Frick paid tribute to her boyfriend on Instagram — and the city that supported him. “Everyday I am reminded of the blessings…to have a country filled with those who stand behind you, a community in Toronto that welcome us with open arms, & friends and family who became Blue Jays fans overnight,” she wrote. “I couldn’t have asked for anything more than for others to find joy in your success just as I do.”
Stefanie Brejcha, girlfriend of Ernie Clement
Brejcha wrote that the Blue Jays family were the “best group of humans I’ve ever met in my life,” and that she was “absolutely honoured” to be a part of it all. The city, one assumes, is included in there.
