Canadian readers must have been paying attention when Montreal-born David Szalay won the Booker Prize on Monday night.

His novel “Flesh,” about an emotionally detached Hungarian man who climbs England’s socioeconomic ladder after serving in Iraq, hasn’t yet hit the original fiction list but is No. 3 on the Canadian one.
