An inquest has been announced into the death of Taher Hashemi, 50, at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre.
The announcement was made earlier in November by regional supervising coroner Dr. Louise McNaughton-Filion.
Hashemi died on Aug. 24, 2021, while in custody at the OCDC. An inquest into his death is mandatory under the Coroners Act.
The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Hashemi’s death, the announcement said, adding that the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.
The announcement of the Hashemi inquest was the second in a span of three months about a 2021 death linked to the OCDC. In late August, McNaughton-Filion said another inquest would be held into the death of Zakaria Sheek Hussein.
Sheek Hussein, 27, died at The Ottawa Hospital on July 24, 2021, from injuries he received while in custody at OCDC.
Further details regarding both inquests, including the respective dates and locations, will be provided at a later date, the coroner’s office posted online.
