A 37-year-old Val-des-Monts man has been charged with impaired driving following a multi-vehicle collision in Gatineau Saturday evening that claimed the life of a 77-year-old woman.

In a release, Gatineau police said the initial call was at about 7 p.m. for a two-car crash on Lorrain Boulevard, north of the intersection with Valiquette Street.

On arrival, police found there were two crashes, a minor collision that was followed by a head-on collision. The driver of the first collision was uninjured.

The driver and passenger in the second collision were both seriously injured and taken to hospital.

The passenger, a 77-year-old woman, succumbed to her injuries. The driver is in stable condition.

Police arrested Rock St-Pierre, who was involved in both collisions.

After interviews with investigators, St-Pierre was detained and appeared in court Sunday, and remains in custody.

He faces charges of impaired driving causing death and bodily harm, and possession of a controlled substance.
