A 29-year-old Dorval, Que. man has been charged after a child was hit by a car while leaving a school bus Tuesday on Highway 17 near Deep River, north of Ottawa.
Provincial police said the incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. as the 10-year-old child left a westbound school bus and was crossing the busy road.
“The bus had its red flashing lights and stop arm activated,” police said in a social media release. “The eastbound car failed to stop and struck the child.”
Renfrew County paramedics brought the child to hospital. The student’s injuries were determined to be “not serious.”
The Quebec driver was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with careless driving causing bodily harm and failing to stop for a school bus with its lights activated.
He was released and is scheduled to appear in Pembroke court on Dec. 15.
“Thankfully, this child was not seriously hurt, but failing to stop for a stopped school bus can be deadly,” OPP said.
