TORONTO – Strength in financial stocks helped Canada’s main stock index rise around 200 points in late-morning trading on Tuesday, while U.S. stock markets were also up.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 199.55 points at 31,369.52.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 161.42 points at 47,900.74. The S&P 500 index was up 14.70 points at 6,861.21, while the Nasdaq composite was up 29.63 points at 23,575.54.
The Canadian dollar traded for 72.30 cents US compared with 72.27 cents US on Monday.
The January crude oil contract was down 59 cents US at US$58.29 per barrel.
The February gold contract was up US$27.20 at US$4,244.90 an ounce.
