TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index was lower in late-morning trading Monday, weighed down by losses in the basic materials sector, while U.S. markets also fell.
The S&P/TSX composite index was down 75.64 points at 31,924.49.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 236.20 points at 48,474.77. The S&P 500 index was down 30.93 points at 6,899.01, while the the Nasdaq composite fell 159.20 points at 23,434.50.
The Canadian dollar traded for 73.13 cents US, unchanged from Dec. 24.
The February crude oil contract was up US$1.50 at US$58.23 per barrel.
The February gold contract was down US$205.10 at US$4,345.10 an ounce.
