TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index was higher in late-morning trading Tuesday on gains in the basic materials sector, while U.S. markets were mixed.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 78.12 points at 31,972.32.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 98.91 points at 48,363.02. The S&P 500 index was down 0.30 points at 6,905.44, while the Nasdaq composite was up 13.71 points at 23,487.06.
The Canadian dollar traded for 73.08 cents US compared with 73.07 cents US on Monday.
The February crude oil contract was up 18 cents US at US$58.26 per barrel.
The February gold contract was up US$41.20 at US$4,384.40 an ounce.
