TORONTO – Strength in the energy, technology and base metal sectors helped Canada’s main stock index gain more than 200 points in late-morning trading, while U.S. stock markets also rose.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 246.18 points at 32,624.82.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 228.92 points at 49,495.03. The S&P 500 index was up 38.13 points at 6,959.59, while the Nasdaq composite was up 166.30 points at 23,646.32.
The Canadian dollar traded for 72.00 cents US compared with 72.12 cents US on Thursday.
The February crude oil contract was up US$1.62 at US$59.38 per barrel.
The February gold contract was up US$55.40 at US$4,516.10 an ounce.
