Why have just one menu when you can have two? Nestled down a side street in Parkdale, Simpl Things is unique in offering two completely different concepts under one roof: Italian during the day and Asian snacks at night. It also deserves more credit as one of Toronto’s most fun hidden-gem restaurants, excelling in both great service and top-notch cocktails, courtesy of owner and drinks doyenne Evelyn Chick.
Chef Cody Wilkes runs the food program with comfort-food aplenty like chicken sandos and wedge salads, along with addictive little baos. Close to Wilkes’ heart right now are some night-menu stars like a succulent pork chop and the charcoal-grill chef’s platter. “There’s so much care and attention to detail in the prep,” he says.
These small acts of love yield great joy for diners and chefs alike. “We have fun when we cook — that’s the most important part of hospitality that, I feel, gets overlooked. Being hospitable should be a fun feeling,” Wilkes says. “I want to cook for people 12 to 15 hours a day. Some call me crazy but it keeps me sane and happy.”
