MONTREAL – Several legislators are calling for Simon Jolin-Barrette to enter the race to succeed François Legault as leader of the Coalition Avenir Québec after the premier’s abrupt resignation announcement Wednesday.
Transport Minister Jonatan Julien on Saturday followed two of his National Assembly colleagues to throw his support behind the justice minister, saying in a social media post he would back Jolin-Barrette if he decides to run.
Shirley Dorismond and Mario Asselin said Friday they hoped he would throw his hat in the ring.
Officially, Jolin-Barrette remains on the sidelines, posting his thanks Friday but holding back from declaring a candidacy.
On Saturday, Public Security Minister Ian Lafrenière told reporters he was mulling a bid. Ministers Jean-François Simard and Bernard Drainville also have not ruled out the possibility.
Economy Minister Christine Fréchette said Thursday she is considering a go at the top spot, while Finance Minister Eric Girard indicated he was “interested” in the leadership, but that it was too early for a decision.
