A boil water advisory has been declared in a wide area of the City of Gatineau, after an incident at the city’s drinking water treatment plant.

The city said an electrical problem during ongoing work at the water plant Thursday morning caused a temporary shutdown of distribution pumps.

This resulted in a brief drop in water pressure, the city said in a release.

“Water pressure in the distribution system has now been restored (but) a preventive boil water advisory is required,” the city said.

An estimated 70,000 residents are affected.

The city said:

  • Residents in the area affected must boil their water for one minute before consuming it.
  • Once the boil water advisory is lifted, residents will be required to open all cold-water taps and let the water run for one minute, or until it becomes cold, before using it.
  • Follow the same procedure for water fountains.
  • Discard any ice made with water during the boil water advisory.
