The Hintonburg Community Association has established an assistance fund for 19 people displaced by a rooming house fire Sunday night at 65 Armstrong St.

A 70-year-old male resident was found unconscious in the building, but later died in hospital. The victim’s identity has not been released.

Nineteen other residents were displaced and fire damages will prevent them from returning “for many months to come.”

The Red Cross assisted the displaced residents for the first three nights and “the city is working on finding temporary and hopefully permanent accommodations.”

The association said the building landlord and Coun. Jeff Leiper are assisting to provide funds to help with resettlement.

Cheques can be left at the Hintonburg Community Association Inc. at the desk at the Hintonburg Community Centre, 1064 Wellington St. W. Donors are asked to write “Fire Fund” in the memo on the cheque.

The HCA is not a charitable organization and cannot provide a tax receipt.

“Time is of the essence,” the association and Leiper said on social media.

“We hope to disburse money that has been donated by Jan. 29 and will make a second disbursement for any money after that date.”
