Illegal moose hunting at Mer Bleue Bog costs duo $8,950, licence suspensions

Two Ottawa-area men have been fined a total of $8,950 and had their hunting licences suspended for a year each after pleading guilty to moose hunting violations at Mer Bleue Bog conservation area in eastern Ottawa.

Luc Dupuis of Rockland was fined $7,500 after pleading guilty to charges of hunting moose without a licence and possessing another person’s tag while hunting.

Fernand Cléroux of Orléans was fined $1,450 and ordered to completing the Ontario Hunter Education Course after pleading guilty to using a firearm carelessly to hunt and to hunting moose on private land without carrying the required consent of the landowner.

A justice of the peace for the Ontario Court of Justice heard the case on April 24, 2025.

Court was told that on Oct. 8, 2024, conservation officers on all-terrain vehicles near Milton Road located two hunters at the Mer Bleue Bog, which is National Capital Commission property and where hunting is are prohibited.

A news release from Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources, dated Feb. 6, said the  officers located a hunting blind, bait site and a bull moose that had been shot by Dupuis that morning.

Cleroux was found to have been hunting on a nearby property without the required landowner consent. He was also charged with handling a firearm without due care and attention.

The bull moose from the illegal hunt was seized and donated, the ministry’s release added.
