An 82-year-old Pembroke man is dead after being hit by a vehicle on Highway 401 near Quinte West.

At about 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 1, emergency crews were called to the scene of what the OPP described as a two-vehicle collision in the westbound lanes of the 401, near County Road 40.

A vehicle had stopped in a live lane of the 401 due to a flat tire, and when a passenger got out of the vehicle he was struck by a second vehicle, the OPP said in a news release Sunday. He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead, police said.

The Quinte West OPP detachment is investigating, with assistance from the OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement team.

Anyone with information or video footage of the incident was asked to contact Quinte West OPP at 1-888-310-1122, or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at ontariocrimestoppers.ca.

A section of the 401 was closed after the collision, but has since reopened.
