REGINA – Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is applauding a move by India’s government to strike a deal with Canada on uranium.
Moe is in New Delhi, where he watched Prime Minister Mark Carney ink the deal with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The $2.6-billion agreement means Saskatoon-based Cameco is to supply just under 22 million pounds of uranium to India over nine years.
Moe says the announcement holds a lot of promise for a bright future together.
Saskatchewan is the sole producer of uranium in Canada, with mines that export the material primarily for power generation.
The province says the uranium industry contributed more than $2.5 billion to the province’s gross domestic product in 2024.
“Today marks a great day for this long-standing partnership and holds a lot of promise for a bright future together,” Moe said in a news release Monday.
Cameco CEO Tim Gitzel said in the statement that the deal will help fuel the energy needs of India’s growing population and industries.
“We are thankful for the continued advocacy of the Saskatchewan and Canadian governments to foster international trade opportunities that allow us to meet the needs of global customers and bring the benefits home,” he said.
