Plenty of snow for Ottawa despite the arrival of spring

The calendar might be insisting that spring arrived in the capital Friday morning, but the weather memo hasn’t spread around.

Environment Canada had a “special weather statement” for the capital on the first official day of spring, calling for up to 10 centimetres of snow expected.

The snowfall is expected to be be “heavy at times.”

“The heaviest snow is expected to fall this morning,” the agency warned.

“Roads and walkways may be difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.”

The forecast is for periods of snow to continue until mid-afternoon. The periods of snow are expected to change to cloudy periods with a 40 per cent chance of flurries in the afternoon, with an additional five cm of snow and a high of about 0 C.

Friday night’s expected to be cloudy with a 40-per cent chance of flurries and a low of -9 C.

Saturday’s expected to be very springlike, with a mix of sun and cloud and a high of about 5 C.

But precipitation, either rain or snow, is expected to return on Sunday, with a high of about 2 C.

Monday’s outlook is for more clouds and a 30-per-cent chance of flurries.

The high should be around 0 C.
