This clay formed roughly 13,000 years ago at the end of the last glaciation period as glacier melt combined with saltwater from the ocean to form the Champlain Sea in what’s now the St. Lawrence and Ottawa Valleys, according to Marc Hinton, a hydrogeologist with the Geological Survey of Canada and Natural Resources Canada.
