A 14-year-old is facing charges after the Tamil Genocide Memorial at Chinguacousy Park was vandalized last month.

Police in Peel Region say they were called to the park on March 20 and discovered the memorial had been defaced with derogatory spray-painted messages.

Following an investigation, police arrested a Brampton teen and charged them with two counts of mischief over $5,000.

The Youth Criminal Justice Act prevents investigators from releasing the teen’s name.

“Peel Regional Police will not tolerate vandalism — especially hate-motivated crimes of spaces that are meaningful to our communities,” said police chief Nishan Duraiappah. “People across the region have the right to feel safe in public spaces. We thank our Hate Crime Unit for acting swiftly to locate and hold those responsible accountable.”
