The 19-year-old man accused in a fatal hit-and-run of
a Barrhaven crossing guard
in March has waived his right to a bail hearing and is expected to enter a plea later this month, the Ottawa Citizen has learned.
Xzander Wright
appeared briefly in court on Tuesday morning for a bail hearing, but the case was adjourned until April 28.
Entering a plea starts the formal trial process, where Wright is told what he is accused of and enters a plea of guilty or not guilty.
Wright was charged with failure to stop after an accident causing death after
Peter Clark
, 55, was struck at about 8:20 a.m. on Monday, March 23 at the intersection of Cedarview Road and Kennevale Drive, near Mary Honeywell Elementary School.
Clark was taken to hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Police said that day they were searching for a driver who fled the scene in what they described as a dark-coloured pickup truck.
On Tuesday, March 24, multiple police cruisers could be seen outside a residence in the area, just steps away from the school. A black Toyota Tundra with a “HAIL SATAN” decal across the windshield was parked in the driveway. Police later confirmed that the truck was connected to the hit-and-run investigation.
Wright is also
facing impaired driving charges in Brockville.
He pleaded not guilty to those charges on Friday, March 27, and the matter is scheduled to go to trial later this year.
