Prime Minister Mark Carney further distanced Canada’s interests from those of the U.S. Sunday morning in a pre-recorded address to Canadians.
In a nearly 10-minute video posted to YouTube entitled “Forward Guidance with Prime Minister Mark Carney,” he affirmed the Liberals’ “Canada Strong” plan to safeguard the country against U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs, including through massive investments in the military, housing and infrastructure, and energy.
Carney, seated in a casual suit before a bookcase, echoed his Davos speech by emphasizing that amid global tensions “hope isn’t a plan” and “nostalgia isn’t a strategy.”
The prime minister acknowledged the cost-of-living crisis many Canadians are currently facing while also invoking past struggles in Canada’s history, citing the challenge of establishing the country in an “inhospitable land” and the Battle of Vimy Ridge in World War I.
He promised that the Liberals’ plan could be “a boost today and a bridge to tomorrow.”
More to come.
