REGINA – A Saskatchewan legislature member says she left the Opposition NDP because she was told to keep quiet rather than speak out on a law that can force drug treatment on those battling addictions.
Betty Nippi-Albright, who now sits as an Independent, says NDP Leader Carla Beck ignored her pleas to release a report that identified problems with involuntary care.
Nippi-Albright says she commissioned the report to receive opinions from experts on the best way to address the issue.
She says she doesn’t agree with Beck’s position of only supporting forced treatment as a last resort.
Nippi-Albright declined to say if she has other issues with Beck’s leadership.
Beck has said she’s upset with her former caucus member leaving, and she is expected to speak with reporters later today.
