Four Canadians who were stuck on a cruise ship at the centre of the hantavirus outbreak are now isolated after flying into Victoria, B.C., Sunday night.
A couple in their 70s from the Yukon, along with two British Columbian patients — one in their 70s and another in their 50s — have been screened and assessed and remain asymptomatic.
B.C.’s Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, says the news is reassuring, but all four are still within the virus’ critical incubation period.
The patients will stay isolated and under observation for a minimum of 21 days.
None of the four had any known contact with anyone ill on the cruise ship.
Henry adds that hantavirus is much different than COVID-19 or other respiratory illnesses. She says it is not highly transmissible and does not have the same pandemic potential.
More to come.
