This June, the Star launches Theatre Club, a series of events that invites readers to the season’s vital productions alongside senior arts critic Joshua Chong. Each outing begins before you reach the theatre, with Chong providing personal notes to help frame the performance. It is a rare chance to see a play through the lens of a critic, followed by a dinner to dissect the work together.
The series opens June 3 at Crow’s Theatre with Eboni Booth’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Primary Trust. The play follows Kenneth, a man forced to navigate an uncertain future after the bookstore where he’s worked for 20 years closes its doors. Over mai tais at a suburban tiki bar, Kenneth must summon the courage to face his traumatic past and possibilities of his future.
Following the performance, readers will get a behind-the-scenes look at the production, then gather at Piano Piano for dinner and guided conversation with Chong. Because these evenings are designed for conversation, space is, by necessity, limited.
