Liberal democracies are cutting public-service jobs. How does Canada stack up?

Like New Zealand and the U.K., Canada’s public service grew significantly during the pandemic, increasing from a population of around 285,000 in 2019 to about 365,000 in 2024. The Carney government’s first budget projected a decline over five years of nearly 40,000 positions, or about 10 per cent, from that peak in 2023-2024.
