A staff sergeant with the Ottawa Police Service has been charged with assault following an off-duty incident in Oakville.
The OPS issued a news release saying that Walt Lushman had been charged by the Halton Regional Police Service following an alleged dispute related to a two-vehicle collision on the night of June 12.
After being charged, Lushman was released from custody with conditions, the OPS release said, adding that the matter remained under investigation by Halton police.
As well, an investigation has been started by the OPS Professional Standards Unit under the Community Safety and Policing Act.
Lushman will have no public-facing duties while the matter is investigated, OPS said.
“The OPS holds all officers to a high standard of conduct, both on and off duty, and expects their actions to reflect the trust and values of the community we serve,” the statement added.
According to Ontario’s “Sunshine List” of public-sector compensation, Lushman was paid slightly more than $200,000 in salary and benefits in 2025.
