Hundreds of soccer fans gathered at Lansdowne Park on Wednesday afternoon to watch a pivotal World Cup match between Canada and Switzerland in Vancouver, but the Canadian supporters didn’t get the result they wanted.
The Natural Watch Party on the big screen at Lansdowne was one of several being held across the country on June 24, according to an Ottawa Tourism news release.
Canada fell behind 2-0 Wednesday and couldn’t equalize, suffering a 2-1 loss that left it in second place, behind Switzerland, at the end of Group B play.
As a result, the Canadian side, after enjoying home-pitch advantage in its group games, will have to travel to Los Angeles for its first knockout-round game on Sunday.
Ruebén Vargas opened the scoring in the 46th minute Wednesday, and Johan Manzambi gave the Swiss a two-goal cushion in the 57th before Promise David scored Canada’s lone goal in the 76th.
