The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after an Ottawa police officer allegedly shot and wounded a 42-year-old man during an alleged hostage standoff in Kanata Thursday night.
“The man was arrested in connection with holding a woman hostage and taken to hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury,” the agency said in a release Friday.
The SIU release said Ottawa police received a 911 call at about 7 a.m. about a woman being held hostage at knifepoint inside a home on Finlayson Crescent in the Morgan’s Grant district.
Police attempted to negotiate with the suspect until about 9 p.m., when a tactical unit entered the residence to free the woman.
The woman was not injured during the operation.
The suspect is described as being in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries in hospital.
Four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case by the SIU.
Anyone with information about the investigation, including video or photos, is asked to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or at the SIU website.
The SIU is an independent provincial agency that investigates police actions that may have resulted in death, serious injury and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
No identities have been released.
