TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index gained ground in late-morning trading, helped by gains in the basic materials sector, while U.S. markets also rose.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 181.20 points at 36,317.51.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 121.43 points at 54,006.53. The S&P 500 index was up 35.67 points at 7,745.63, while the Nasdaq composite was up 255.93 points at 26,604.28.
The Canadian dollar traded for 71.68 cents US compared with 71.34 cents US on Thursday.
The September crude oil contract was up 27 cents US at US$77.56 per barrel.
The December gold contract was up US$109.00 at US$4,408.60 an ounce.
